School Wide Strategies Dealing With Bullying The best strategy for a school to prevent bullying is to educate the teachers, parents and students. Schools need to establish school wide behavior strategies that all teachers are aware of and follow. These strategies should include a clear, positive purpose with positive expectations for pro social behavior. Another thing a school should do is have a set of procedures that reward students who display expected behaviors. To go along with that schools also need to have a set of procedures for discouraging violations of school set expectations of behavior. The teachers need to be taught or refreshed of these procedures frequently to keep them up to date with new forms of bullying. Also if a school is going to set expectations and procedures they need to enforce them so a school needs to have a method for implementations and effectiveness of these procedures. To help detect bullying the school should have staff around the school looking for bullying, especially in “hot spots” where bullying is known to happen most often. Every school needs to be able to provide their students and staff with a variety of resources including professionals with expertise in intercultural and diversity related counseling and human relations. Schools should also develop programs that help students who are being bullied and that help the students who are doing the bullying. A creative way to speak to all the students about bullying is to have an assembly in which a type of motivational speaker addresses the seriousness and the consequences of bullying. Schools also need to discuss the topic of cyber bullying with students. The school needs to ensure the student being bullied knows that they did nothing wrong to deserve what is happening to them and that they shouldn’t respond to any messages and that they should save all messages for reporting purposes. Whether it be bullying in school, out of school or cyber bullying the student being bullied needs to know that help is there for them and that they need to report what is happening to a trusted adult. The way schools will work with the parents to prevent bullying is having the teachers and parents have a working relationship if they are concerned about a certain student. Also the school will keep all the parents up to date with all the new forms of bullying and ways they can help prevent them at home as well as keeping them informed on the resources the schools have.

In Class Strategies Dealing With Bullying Our classroom strategy will start with asking everyone in the classroom do they know and understand what the definition of bullying is. From there, students will be given a chart where they are able to use words describing what they believe bullying is. An effective strategy and activity that can stop bullying before it starts will be the concept to expose the myths. There are many myths about bullying, we will provide each student with a myth off the true/false checklist asking them if it’s true or false then provide the correct answer for them. How did students' ideas compare with the answers given? Discuss and analyze the differences. The classroom strategy supports and reflects the school-wide strategy because the bullying issue is not only being addressed throughout the school but is also being taught individually through classroom concepts. Students will focus and have a better understanding of what it feels like to be bullied and what is the definition of bullying is through classroom strategies because they are not only listening but they are participating in classroom activities as well. By focusing on the topic bullying in a classroom setting students will also process the information better. The classroom strategy will also help focus on the concepts of ways parents can become involved with their children personal lives and social lives, encouraging them to report and stop any incident revolving bullying. Explaining ways for parents to teach their children everyone is equal. And also ways how the community can positively encourage respectful behaviors at home as well as school. There will be different actions that can take place to get everyone to stop bullying; reinforcing a message that bullying is wrong. Another effective strategy and activity that can stop bullying before it starts will be the concept of building conflict-resolution skills. Building conflict resolution skills will help students learn ways in which they can resolve conflicts in a positive manner.
As for teachers the best opportunity for them to address bullying to their students is in the classroom. A teacher has numerous ways that they can approach bullying in the classroom. The first one is just being able to bring up the topic in class discussion form. Bringing up bullying in the classroom like this lets the students know that this topic can be talked about and doesn’t have to be kept a secret. The more the students know that the teachers are aware that bullying is going on the lesser chance it has of happening. A teacher can also bring up bullying in the classroom by using role playing. Role playing gives students an opportunity to see their fellow classmates act out bullying right in front of them. It also brings up an opportunity for a bully to play the part of the student being bullied and can show them what it feels like to be the one being bullied. Another strategy a teacher can use in the classroom is teaching bullying through literature or showing examples of bullying throughout history. Having students learn about bullying through literature can be effective because they can see the negative consequences of bullying. Also showing the students bullying through history is a great way too, because the examples you can show them can be anywhere from Hitler to a recent high school shooting. Another thing a teacher should go over with their class is that there is a difference between tattling and reporting. Explain to them that the difference between tattling and reporting is that tattling on someone is to get them in trouble and reporting something is to keep somebody safe. A good thing to tell the students’ is to let them know that if they are being bullied that is okay to just flat out say “this is bullying.” Sometimes the bully doesn’t realize that they are actually performing the act of bullying or just hearing a student say that can stop a bully because they don’t want the student to report them. |
